The plug and socket are something that we have used a million times in our lives. The plug and socket have been a historical discovery. Today we plug different types of electrical appliances in the socket easily without much risk. However, has it always been so simple and safe? No.
In earlier times, people use to plug in electrical appliances with mere open-ended wires. Sometimes even with incompatible plugs! Today almost each country in the world uses its specific standards for plugs, sockets, and power cords. So how is the installation of electrical appliances in the sockets today with negligible risks?
Answer is simple!
Using Power Cords. Power cords are the line cable or mains cable. It is this cable, which bears the burden of temporarily connecting a portable electronic appliance with the main electrical supply line. It makes this possible by the attached pair of connecting couplers on its either ends.
These connector power cords are detachable from the mains supply line and the Electrical appliances. Power cord is a flexible and an insulated conductor having one male and one female connector attached at its either end. All these power cords and its coupler designing by the manufacturers across the globe are on the preset standards set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
NEMA
Back in 1926, the establishment of National Electrical Manufacturing Association (NEMA) in North America took place. It developed NEMA 1 connector. Today NEMA power cords are in use all over North America and in countries, which have specified the NEMA standards. Other countries have created their own set of power plug standards. It can destroy the appliances, if these are in use with unmatched power supply.
NEMA Power Cords
A basic NEMA connector has two pins or flat prongs, which are almost 5 inches apart from each other; it is the NEMA type 1. If it also consists of a round pin or prong right below the two flat prongs, NEMA type 5 is its name. A “grounded plug” uses a third pin for grounding purposes.
Safety Measures
There are many variants of the NEMA plugs available in the United States and North America but NEMA type 1 & type 5 are the most common among them. Some NEMA plugs undergo polarization. These plugs need a special attention when plugged in the socket.
If not installed in a specifically instructed manner, it can destroy the appliance. To avoid this kind of an accident, its design is such that the specific prong of the plug fills a specific hole of the socket. Hence, these types of NEMA plugs have two flat pins of unequal length.
Classification
The main classification of NEMA devices includes straight blade and locking. In the household consumer goods consisting of electrical appliances, Straight blade is evident. The locking NEMA power cord is in use for the major industrial applications.
Straight blade has a design such that detaches it swiftly and the latter has a design such that it does not detach easily from the receptacle. A receptacle is a device mounted on an electrical appliance where the external power cord attaches.
The curve blade of the locking type of NEMA cord allows the plug to entwine and lock into the receptacle. The letter L preceding the NEMA code identifies the locking conductor.

The most important equipment used on wired computer networks is an ethernet cable. The use of Ethernet cable is for connecting computers, routers, switches in a local area network. It looks like a phone cable but has more wires and is larger. These cables are physically attached they need to have certain peculiarities. The cables’ physical characteristics alter or modify in accordance of the requirements.
The purpose of the cable’s usability gave birth to different categories. Different type of network LAN cables design creation is to ensure its performance of certain tasks in a particular situation. Therefore, which type of ethernet cable suits the best – is a common headache for us. Why do these cables contain twisted pair of wires? Sometimes these wires have a cover, sometimes they do not. Why so?
The cable designs vary in length, range, intensity, and ability in transmitting network signals. The available standard ethernet cables in the market are the category 5 (CAT5), enhanced category 5 (CAT5E), category 6 (CAT6). The last standard cable is the augmented category 6 (CAT6A).
Let us examine the differences closely.
Specifications
The higher you go in the category, higher is the speed and frequency. The stringent testing elements and added isolation between the wires makes this possible. CAT5 is a standard ethernet cable with the maximum transmission speed up to 100MB/second and a frequency of 100MHz. For Cat5E, the maximum speed rises up to 1GB/second.
The frequency evolves with the Cat6 up to 250MHz along with the maximum speed of 10GB/second. For achieving this speed, Cat6 compromises with its length. All three cables have the maximum length of 100 metres, but for achieving 10GB/second, the length reduces to 55 meters.
CAT6A is the fastest amongst these cables in terms of speeds and frequency. Its length too, unlike the CAT6 remains 100 meters even when it is transmitting 10GB/second. It has a limitation though. The higher frequency up to 500MHz eliminated the alien crosstalk, which could enhance the longer ranges up to 10GB/second.
Twists And Turns Mystery
Alexander Graham Bell while discovering the telephone invented the twists and turns on the cable. For increasing the range and reducing the interference, the cable has twists at regular intervals. This principle of a twisted pair of wires became the basis for our ethernet cord.
There is no predefined standard for the twists, but within a cable, there are specific numbers of turn at regular intervals. A lan cable contains more than one set of wires and these sites have twist lengths based on prime numbers. This is to avoid any twists to align.
Shielded Wires
The primary goal of all the internet cable wire manufacturers is to reduce the external or internal interference while transmission. For achieving this, the wires underneath the sheath have shields. It has a very higher efficiency and cost. Nevertheless, your computer’s connection with your wall keystone Jack does not need such high efficiency. Therefore, that can be without shields.
The shield protects from internal cross-talk and interference. Lesser the interference, higher the efficiency!
To build a network and to bring a device into a network, one needs to connect the portable device with the central processing unit (CPU). The USB cables, optical fibres and other Networking cables are worthless of a port is not already mounted on the unit. No cable can connect a port less device with the central unit or the port less unit with the device!
So the question that arises is, what lets the portable devices like keyboards, pointers, digital camera connect with the CPU using Ethernet cables, USB Cables or optical fibers?
Keystone Jack is the magic port which aids this functionality. Every connecting device has a female unit installed in it and the cables have the male chords attached on their ends called “keystone plugs”. They mate and the devices are connected where you want it to get connected. Keystone Jacks are the most important units in networking. They are designed to get affixed into keystone plates, keystone boxes and patch panels.
They have a standard design, they are flexible, they are easily mountable, even on the wall! Multiple keystone jacks can also be installed on a single plate having multiple ports. They are available in multiple variants and you can choose in accordance of your need.
Cat5e And Cat6 Keystone Jacks
Both Cat5e and Cat6 are the cables which plug into the same keystone Jack of your Ethernet jack, routers and switches but has a distinct use, design and application. Both are twisted pair cables consisting of copper wires.
Speed
The Cat5e Keystone Jack supports speed limit upto 1000MBPS and the Cat6 cables has a speed limit upto 10GBPS over 120-150 feet. The speed of cat6e of 10GBPS (Gigabit) is limited up to 164 feet and thereafter it’s speed is same as that of Cat5e.
Cost
The cost of the cables vary by length and differ from manufacturer to manufacture. The standard Cat5e costs generally around $0.20 per foot. And the standard Cat6 costs around 20% higher than the Cat5e.
Frequency
The Cat5e frequency range is upto 100MHz and in contrast that of Cat6 is up to 250MHz. Hence it has a higher sound to noise ratio and is also more rigid as compared to Cat5e. The tighter twist of the Cat6 allows it conduct two way communication and it is faster than that of Cat5e.
The cables cannot be identified based on the colors and the variant of the cable is generally printed on the cable. Even though Cat6 can be identified without the print as it thicker than Cat5e as it consists of a thicker copper wire.
Keystone jacks Cat5e and Cat6 both are sound options and it totally depends upon the user to choose the jack. If the servers are placed on the clouds, Cat5e is more economical as the internal connectivity won’t matter but only the internet connectivity will be efficient enough. Cat6 sure does provide you with better performance and it is much efficient if a better investment option if you do not have cables above 120-150 feet.
Computers have become a necessity in today’s world with almost every aspect of life being largely dependent on computers. Effective computer systems are required for completing all general and specific purpose tasks.
Computers store large data in their memory that serves many functions. Computer adapters and cables are required for their proper functioning. Adapter is the main device that transmits data throughout the system. The entire input and output functioning is based on a computer adapter.
Computer adapters are used for connecting additional enhancements to our system. Various adapters like gender changers, mini centurions adapters etc are used as connective modules for the computer. Various cables are available which have effective adapters for their connection with computers. Ports to connect adapters to the system are available at the backside of a CPU.
The adapters are fully braided and shielded for safety purpose. These adapters have ferrite cores on each end which are used to suppress noise. Using right type of connectors is essential for proper functioning of a computer system. Computer adapters are also helpful in connecting a computer to a network.
